If you have not yet visited the demonstration gardens in Mueller’s Southwest Greenway, now is the time to explore the peaceful and educational setting at the edge of Mueller’s largest Greenway. Designed in partnership between the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, RVi Planning and McCann Adams Studio, the demonstration gardens feature a collection of 14 species of Texas native plants ranging from sage to mountain laurel to kidneywood.
The collection of colorful plants, which require less water in our region’s semi-arid climate, provide strong examples of plantings to consider in Central Texans’ private gardens. The demonstration gardens are among a number of beautiful features of Mueller’s Southwest Greenway, a 32-acre park that replaced some of the former airport’s parking lots with the return of a nationally endangered ecosystem known as the Blackland Prairie.
The Southwest Greenway features nature-inspired public art, hike & bike trails, a tranquil pond with a set of waterfalls, park benches, a collection of short, medium and tall grasses and a series of signs to help visitors better understand their surroundings. This quiet park is ideal for nature and wildlife walks, bicycling along trails and science field trips.
Additionally, the Southwest Greenway recently received the Honor Award from the Texas Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) for being a prime example of how parkland can become a community asset through environmental restoration, education and connection with residents.
Locals can get involved by joining Friends of the Prairie, a group of volunteers that leads the effort to keep the Greenway beautiful. The group also holds educational workshops along with work days in the Greenway.
