Both the Cinema and the Diamond buildings along Aldrich Street have earned high ratings from the Austin Energy Green Building (AEGB) program. The Cinema Building earned three stars, while the finish out of the Alamo Drafthouse building earned four stars. The Diamond Building also earned four stars through the program.
The Cinema Building also earned LEED-silver certification and the Diamond Building earned LEED-Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The Cinema Building incorporates low-emitting construction materials and employs green housekeeping practices and waste management policies to support environmental sustainability. The building’s energy-efficient HVAC systems, LED lighting and building envelope have generated 20 percent peak demand energy savings. Anchor tenant Alamo Drafthouse has eliminated most single-use plastic items from operations and composts table scraps, further increasing its sustainability practices. Alamo Drafthouse also subscribes to the Austin Energy GreenChoice program, choosing 100 percent Texas wind energy for its power source.
The Diamond Building was designed to respond to the context of its physical surroundings, featuring a reclaimed water system, an innovative and artistic rainwater collection that channels the water from the distinct roofline to a cistern that B.D. Riley’s playfully transformed into landmark supersized beer tap. The three-story, mixed-use building uses highly-efficient HVAC systems and daylight-responsive LED lighting, which contribute to 30 percent energy cost savings. Low-emission materials were also incorporated to bolster occupant health and productivity.
