Austin Energy has broken ground on an energy storage facility that could become a national model for future clean energy storage systems. The Austin Sustainable and Holistic Integration of Energy Storage and Solar Photovoltaics (SHINES) project will use a collection of seven, 10-foot-cubed energy storage units composed of lithium-ion batteries and inverters to store the energy produced by nearby solar panels during the day to be used when the sun is not shining.
The Austin SHINES project is located along the upcoming extension of Zach Scott Street and the future extension of Tom Miller Street in the northeast area of Mueller near other commercial facilities, including the Austin Film Society and the City/County Emergency Command Center.
“Mueller is an ideal location to establish a community energy storage facility for a number of reasons, including the development’s focus on sustainability and high concentration of rooftop solar panels. The Austin SHINES project also includes commercial and residential battery storage installations within the community, some of which are installed by Pecan Street (which serves as a partner on the project),” said Lisa Martin, Project Manager for Austin SHINES. “We are striving to maximize the solar energy being generated at Mueller as well as elsewhere to determine how we can expand solar energy production and usage to meet the City’s vision of achieving 65 percent renewable energy generation by 2027.”
A 10-foot-tall wall with multiple glass cutouts will not only protect the infrastructure, but also allow interested viewers the opportunity to look inside. The wall will be fronted by educational panels and native/adaptive landscaping along a future hike and bike trail. The new facility is scheduled to be operational for energy storage this fall. The program is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
