10 years ago in May 1999, the last flight left Robert Mueller Municipal Airport and signified the closing of Austin’s first airport. The return flights landed at Austin Bergstrom International Airport and planning for how to reuse the 711 acres that was the former airport continued. Now, with over 20 years of planning and four years of construction, progress in Mueller can be widely seen. Catellus Development Group, master developer of Mueller in central Austin, announced that it has selected the locally led team of DMA Development Company (DMA) and Carleton Residential Properties to build a multi-family housing community exclusively for seniors in Mueller’s future Tower District.The team of DMA and Carleton has selected Austin-based Hailey Group Architects to design the building. The Mueller vision of a diverse mixed-use urban village in the heart of Austin includes a variety of retail components—regional retail, the Mueller town center, and neighborhood-serving retail. Construction on the 165,000-square-foot building that houses the Seton Family of Hospitals administration functions is complete and Mueller is excited to welcome the nearly 650 employees who are making the move to Mueller. The PUD is the basic and very general zoning that governs the project. It sets forth the maximum amount of commercial space and residential development that can occur in the project, as well as establishes the uses allowed and maximum amounts of space within particular districts, or land use areas. For over two years, changes to the current PUD have been contemplated. These proposed changes have been filed with the City of Austin after several public discussions.
